Is It Normal for My Baby to Have a Dent in the Back of Her Head

Freaking Out, Baby's head dent?
Okay, on one side of her head it is all rounded and head-like
on the other side her head "dents?"
Is this the soft spot? How large should it be?
I just noticed this today when I was rubbing her head while she was eating. At first I thought she bumped her head and it was a knot (like maybe she had knocked her head against the crib, we don't have bumpers b/c of SIDS fears), but then I felt it more and decided it was too large.
So now I'm freaking out. Is my baby deformed? Is this normal? I'm calling the ped in the morning.
Sorry this isn't more specific. I don't know how to explain it. just that one side of her head feels "normal" and the other feels "dented"

Can you be more specific about the location of the 'dents'? DD had knots behind her ears that freaked me out but it turns out they were glands and normal. IIWY I'd ask my ped.
Just yesterday I was laughing at myself for all the crazy first-time mama things I called the doctor for Head dents are not crazy and are definitely worthy of a call.

Let's see. If you were looking at DD
The right back side of her head is smooth and rounded. However as you move your hand to the left side of her head towards the lower part of her head you feel a bump. I'm assuming the bump is part of her skull. . .
The bump/dent runs at a downward angle and ends behind her ear.
I don't really know what the "soft spot" is supposed to feel like and also I read about the skull bones fusing together and how they don't for awhile after birth. . .I just don't know what this is.

I'm no expert, only know about my DS's head. His soft spot definitely freaked me out! It certainly "dents," but his is right in the center top front.
A friend's DC did have a swollen knot behind his ear that turned out to be an infection.

Yeah, I'd call the ped. Might be totally normal, but might not. Best to be safe!
And let us know, ok?

It sounds like the bones of the skull are overlapping a bit - which is completely normal. the bones can move around for quite a while to allow for head growth. But if its bothering you, get your Ped to look at it.

Plagiocephaly maybe?
http://www.plagiocephaly.info/faqs/w...giocephaly.htm
If it is plagio you will need to get your little one off her back and on her tummy or upright more often (in a bjorn or similar type carrier). If she is sleeping with her head facing one way you should attempt to turn her head to the other side once she is sleeping. If all else fails they will suggest a helmet that she will wear for like 6 weeks and it will round out!

obviously it is hard to know without seeing your DC, but plagiocephaly is one possibility (as the PP mentioned). If the head shape is not symmetrical, another thing to consider is torticollis, which can often go hand in hand with plagiocephaly (a tight neck muscle leads to torticollis, and because the neck muscle is tight, the head doesn't get an even distribution of weight on it, leading to flattening on certain parts). Many parents and doctors miss torticollis because babies are very good at compensating...unless you know how to isolate specific joints in the neck, etc. it can be tricky to detect early on.

shawnandangel -- What did the ped say?
I remember freaking out about some spots on my DD's head when she was a newborn, and they were fine.
I would definitely ask... but hopefully it is nothing...
Let us know what the ped says?

Went to Ped's office. She said it was a suture (not sure I'm spelling it correctly) and that it is completely normal. She does have a bit of head flatness but very very very mild. The doc said to just encourage her to sleep with her head facing the opposite direction. So, just laid her down for her nap and put a mirror in her crib on the side she "should" be facing. Hope it works!
Woot! So glad everything is okay!
